CHICKEN FARMERS
I ordered 50 baby chicks that should arrive the week of June 3rd. They are 25 White Orpingtons and 25 Black Australorps. My neighbor Corey and I will raise them, and when they’re big enough, we’ll process them. We plan on keeping some pullets to replace the hens we lost last year or possibly selling some. It’s illegal to sell the meat, so we will can what we don’t eat right away. I’ve been canning meat for a couple of years, it tastes good, it’s ready to eat, and it doesn’t take up freezer space.
We’re lucky enough to have access to a neighbors field that is outside the city limits to keep the chickens when they’re big enough. We are in the process of building a chicken “tractor”, which is just a large cage that will be moved easily and often so they have access to fresh grass and bugs and worms. So they will be “free range”, healthy birds.

Awesome! I have always wanted chickens but we can’t really have them here because of the business (technically it’s not our property). I hope you have better luck keeping the predators away.

We haven’t lost any birds since we got the rooster last fall. He’s big and mean and likes rough sex.
Oh, how cool and wonderful! I love chickens!
Does he have a name?!
I hope you will keep us posted on their progress! Good luck!
That rooster looks like he will keep everyone in line!
HUGS!!!

His name is Rooster.
A rooster named Rooster. Fair enough, lol.
You sound very well organized, Paul !
Better than on the Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels show back in the day on the radio here in the UK.
Bebe decided to raise chicks, like you, so she bought a dozen hens and a dozedn cockerels !
