  • A SALUTE TO COUNTRY MUSIC BY AARON WILBURN

Country music artists have a special sense of humor in the songs they write!

  • THE OTHER RICHIE

Nicole Richie has become a popular celebrity without doing much else than being a friend and TV partner of Paris Hilton.  I wonder how many people connect her with her talented singer/songwriter father Lionel Richie.

Lionel Richie started as one of the Commodores in the 70's.  He then went on to write and sing some of the greatest songs of the 80's.  Click on the arrow under "Still" below.  Just listen and see if you don't agree with me.

  • INTERESTING GEOGRAPHY (From an email. I don't know if it's  all true, but  it's interesting.)

    Alaska
More than half of the coastline of the entire United States is in Alaska.

    Amazon
The Amazon rainforest produces more than 20% the world's oxygen supply. The Amazon River pushes so much water into the Atlantic Ocean that, more than one hundred miles at sea off the mouth of the river, one can dip fresh water out of the ocean. The volume of water in the Amazon river is greater than the next eight largest rivers in the world combined and three times the flow of all rivers in the United States.

    Antarctica
Antarctica is the only land on our planet that is not owned by any country. Ninety percent of the world's ice covers Antarctica. This ice also represents seventy percent of all the fresh water in the world. As strange as it sounds, however, Antarctica is essentially a desert. The average yearly total precipitation is about two inches Although covered with ice (all but 0.4% of it, i.e.), Antarctica is the driest place on the planet, with an absolute humidity lower than the Gobi desert.

    Brazil
Brazil got its name from the nut, not the other way around.

    Canada
Canada has more lakes than the rest of the world combined. Canada is an Indian word meaning "Big Village."

    Chicago
Next to Warsaw, Chicago has the largest Polish population in the world.

    Detroit
Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan, carries the designation M-1, so named because it was the first paved road anywhere.

    Damascus, Syria
Damascus, Syria, was flourishing a couple of thousand years before Rome was founded in 753 BC, making it the oldest continuously inhabited city in existence.

    Istanbul, Turkey
Istanbul, Turkey, is the only city in the world located on two continents.

    Los Angeles
Los Angeles' full name is El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula --and can be abreviated to 3.63% of its size: L.A.

    New York City
The term "The Big Apple" was coined by touring jazz musiciansof the 1930's who used the slang expression "apple" for any town or city. Therefore, to play New York City is to play the big time - The Big Apple. There are more Irish in New York City than in Dublin, Ireland; more Italians in New York City than in Rome, Italy; and more Jews in New York City than in Tel Aviv, Israel.

    Ohio
There are no natural lakes in the state of Ohio, every one is manmade.

The smallest island with country status is Pitcairn in Polynesia, at just 1.75 sq. miles/4,53 sq. km.

    Rome
The first city to reach a population of 1 million people was Rome, Italy in 133 B.C. There is a city called Rome on every continent.

    Siberia
Siberia contains more than 25% of the world's forests.

    S.M.O.M.
The actual smallest sovereign entity in the world is the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (S.M.O.M.). It is located in the city of Rome, Italy, has an area of two tennis courts, and as of 2001 has a population of 80, 20 less people than the Vatican. It is a sovereign entity under international law, just as the Vatican is.

    Sahara Desert
In the Sahara Desert, there is a town named Tidikelt, which did not receive a drop of rain for ten years. Technically though, the driest place on Earth is in the valleys of the Antarctic near Ross Island. There has been no rainfall there for two million years.

  • HAWK ATTACK

    Yesterday was hawk day.

Sitting in the parking lot at Walgreens, I saw something I had never seen before.  A Hawk was circling in the distance over the river and it was being harassed by a flock of eight or nine smaller birds.  They were taking turns diving on it and the hawk kept swerving and dodging to avoid them. This continued for several minutes until they all disappeared from sight.

Later, something very unusual happened to us.  We were driving the convertible with the top down on our country (longer, but quicker) shortcut to watch a grandson's baseball game.  As we slowed down to go through the tiny community of Lafox, a huge hawk swooped down on us from the right side.  Sweetie was driving and saw it first and was convinced it was going to land in the car.  It came within five feet of the car as it flew over her head and landed in the ditch behind us, probably to grab some lunch.

She didn't know for sure that it wasn't in the back seat and started screaming.  I was more in awe of our close encounter.  That was the closest I had ever been to a hawk and it happened so fast, I was only concerned that it would hit the windshield.

I now know what rodents and other hawk prey see just before they become a meal.  My Irish bride screamed all the way through Lafox.  I'm sure the residents either thought there was an emergency vehicle coming through town or something really strange was happening in our car.

  • THE END OF THE RAINBOW

I've always heard that there was something special at the end of the rainbow.
What could possibly be better than a pot of gold?

  • Lara Fabian - Adagio

To enjoy a beautiful song sung with a lusty and powerful voice, play the song below.  It's one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite artists.

I'm a little confused about the title and the lyrics. Adagio is a musical term meaning slowly.  I don't know if the song refers to a person named Adagio, if it's because the romance is progressing slowly, or if it's because of the songs tempo.

There is an Italian version.  If I only listened to the Italian version, I wouldn't need to worry about it and I could just enjoy the music.

big appetite at one end and no  sense of  responsibility at the
    other."

  • OUR NEIGHBORS, THE WREN FAMILY!

I enjoy these little birds.  I love their song and I enjoy their chatter when they scold me for getting too close. For the last three years, a family of wrens has occupied this tiny abode in one of our backyard trees.

    Wren
Mr. Wren is leaving the building!

    Wren House
He's back with a nice, tasty green tidbit of something.

  • JOSIE LOVES HER CAR RIDES!

You all know that dogs love to ride in the car and stick their head out the side windows.  Well, our Explorer doesn't have roll down windows in the back and Josie isn't allowed to get hair all over the front seats.  So, when she rides in the car, she stands with her front feet on the console and sticks her head out the sun roof.

As we pick up speed, the force of the wind blows her cheeks wide open.  We get a lot of stares and finger pointing, but she's oblivious to the attention.

These dogs are bred for the cold weather of the Great Pyrenees Mountains and have a double coat, so she doesn't care about the temperature except when it's close to freezing.  We can have the heater on full blast and she'll still be enjoying the ride.

We leave the roof open in parking lots as well and she has a pretty good view of the whole parking lot.  I don't worry about anyone climbing in the sun roof and stealing the car.  I don't think anyone would be foolish enough to climb in with her. Even though Josie only weighs 125 pounds, her coat makes her look larger than she really is.
